Guidance notes for cathedrals

To assist Cathedral Administrators, the most commonly used forms relating to the Measure are available to download here.

Note

  • Certain of the Commission's guidance and advice notes - marked ** below - are being comprehensively revised and updated to take account of the amendments made to the Care of Cathedrals Measure 1990 by the Care of Cathedrals (Amendment) Measure 2005, and the Care of Cathedrals Rules 2006, which came into force on January 1st, 2008, or are new documents.
  • Where indicated, other titles are being updated by making minor amendments only at this stage.
  • All other documents, shown with their original date of publication, will be subject to review as soon as possible and will be updated on the website.
  • Where work of drafting or revision is under way, documents are so labelled.

Procedural Guidance Notes

A series combining detailed guidance on the statutory requirements of the Care of Cathedrals Measure 1990, as amended, and straightforward practical guidance on its operation.

PGN1 Cathedral Precincts: their definition, designation and effect under the Care of Cathedrals Measure 1990, as amended (June 2008) - amalgamating GN3 and PG7.

PGN2 Procedures for items of Treasure found within a Cathedral Precinct - new document will follow the making of an Order under Section 2(2) of the Treasure Act 1996.  (The relevant provisions of the Care of Cathedrals (Amendment) Measure 2005 are not yet in operation.)

Directions and Advisory Guidelines on Cathedral Inventories

Any Directions issued by the Commission have statutory effect under Rule 28 of the Care of Cathedrals Rules 2006.  Under the same Rules, the Guidelines offer advice on recommended good practice.

Directions for the Form of the Inventory of a Cathedral Church (September 2001) - currently in revision.  In the meantime, please refer to the Care of Cathedrals Measure 1990, as amended by Section 13 of the Care of Cathedrals (Amendment) Measure 2005, and Rule 28 of the Care of Cathedrals Rules 2006.
