Since its establishment in 1926, the Board has served as the pensions authority for the Church of England. The work of the Board, however, extends to much more than a pension in retirement for clergy, deaconesses and licensed church workers, or for their widows or widowers.
The Board currently has more than 12,500 pensioners of which over 4,000 are clergy widows or widowers. The Board’s discretionary work can assist the more needy of its pensioners, with Supported Housing or Nursing Care and help with fees.
It is the Charitable Funds which support this aspect of the Board’s work. These funds receive no assistance from central Church finance and have to rely on gifts and legacies from caring individuals and PCCs.
The Charitable Funds of the Pensions Board are used to help the more elderly, frail and needy of its pensioners. Pensioners of the Board are all those who have retired from the stipendiary ministry and include licensed lay workers. The wives or husbands of retired clergy and their widows or widowers are also eligible for assistance from the charitable funds.
