April 2009

25th April saw the 2009 CEYC day meeting, bathed in sunshine at Diocesan House.

CEYC met at Diocesan House, Leeds, for the annual day meeting, to discuss, worship and share experiences from across the Church of England.

Members enjoyed fruitful and lively discussion on the new Children and Youth Strategy, the recession, and the Anglican Communion and potential Anglican Covenant.

During the day we were most privileged to be addressed by the Right Rev'd Clive Handford, former Primate of Jerusalem and the Middle East, Chairman of the Windsor Continuation Group and Assistant Bishop of Ripon and Leeds. We are most grateful to Bishop Clive for making an informative and engaging presentation on the Anglican Communion.

Minutes and briefing papers all avaliable on the website.

April planning...

Core group (those happy chaps below) met for a weekend in February to plan the April day meeting (25th April) and decided on these topics:

  • Children's and youth strategy - The Education Division is presenting its new strategy for working children and young people to General Synod this July and want your views!
  • Money matters? - A look at how the economic downturn is affecting youth...
  • Anglican Communion -  Discussing what it means to be Anglican, and what an Anglican Covenant mean for us?

We'll also be looking at whether we want specific Eucharistic prayers for youth, as General Synod is currently considering, and doing some Bible study together.

All welcome - speak to your DYO to find out if you already have reps, or email jennifer.bates@c-of-e.org.uk.

November 2008

Fourth CEYC residential

The 21st-23rd November saw the fourth CEYC full council residential, attracting Council members across the Church of England to debate, worship and talk together.

The weekend's debates focused on the issues surrounding the appointment of women as bishops, the rise of knife crime and a discussion entitled 'How Would Jesus Vote?' which looked at youth and Christian engagement with politics. Alongside this, the weekend also included a craft workshop, Bible study and various different services all combining to create a challenging and deeply special weekend!

Many thanks go to William Fittall and Dean Pusey for excellent outside contributions to the debates on women as bishops and knife crime respectively.

Briefing papers on each of the set topics and minutes are available if you’d like to know more. Equally, if you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to email Rebecca Swinson, CEYC Chair, at chair@ceyc.org or Jen Bates, CEYC gap year student, at jennifer.bates@c-of-e.org.

September 2008

Gap Year Student

After a very successful summer internship for CEYC, the Council now has an intern for the full academic year!

Jen Bates spends two days a week at Church House, Westminster, solely devoted to all things CEYC! The year works in conjunction with the ‘YES Encounter Scheme’, run by Chichester Diocese, to provide a church placement and wider training throughout the time. So far, the year has been excellent, and both CEYC and Jen have gained much already!

The opportunity will be running again next September; if you’d like to know more, please feel free to speak to Jen at Jennifer.bates@c-of-e.org.
