Adult Education, Lay Discipleship and Shared Ministry

Nationally and in each diocese, the Church of England is committed to adult Christian education, training and development. The aim of the Church of England's adult education work is to collaborate with dioceses and other agencies in order to help people to:

  • explore Christian faith and spirituality as an exciting and dynamic process;
  • develop an understanding of the contribution of faith to contemporary life;
  • take up particular tasks and services through Church, community or occupation.

Adult Education

Adult Education and training is offered by dioceses and parishes. The National Adviser, Joanna Cox can help you identify local diocesan officers, resources and information on educational and  learning methodologies.

In addition to diocesan work, national specifications for further theological education for laity have been developed.  Details are included in the  'Education for Discipleship' report included in 'Shaping the Future' (2006)

Lay Discipleship

The purpose of Lay Discipleship is to encourage Christians to develop as disciples of Christ in every sphere of life, in world and in church.

Materials which include explorations of this theme can be found at Vocations Sunday

Shared Ministry

Churches are evolving patterns of teamwork and ways of sharing ministry between clergy and laity. The National Adviser, Joanna Cox works alongside Ministry Division to develop and promote good practice in this area.
