Marriage is among the issues likely to be debated by the General Synod when it gathers in London on February 26th - March 2nd. The Church of England Marriage Measure would allow couples to be married in churches other than that of the parish where they live or usually worship if they have a ‘qualifying connection’. This will next be debated at the revision stage. Synod may also have a first chance to debate legislation on new clergy conditions of service that endow clergy with a range of rights of the kind enjoyed by employees.
Also on the agenda are likely to be criminal justice and prison issues, clergy pensions, the role of minority ethnic Anglicans and the practicalities of the electronic voting system that Synod will soon introduce. Synod will also have the chance to debate one or more private members' and diocesan synod motions
Agendas and papers will be posted on the Church of England website ahead of the Synod sessions, with updates on motions carried and audio files of the debates added throughout the sitting.
