Unite to save the planet

In the new booklet Fair Enough – ways to live for justice, the Mothers’ Union (MU) is encouraging those of its 3.6 million members with consumer power to individually and collectively reduce their ‘carbon footprint’.

The booklet lists ten small but effective ways in which members can mother the earth back to good health. Suggestions include: shopping by public transport; refusing to buy out-of-season fruit and vegetables flown halfway around the world (unless they carry a Fairtrade label); buying less meat; buying second-hand clothes; re-using plastic shopping bags.

Members can make a difference says the MU. Or, as one newspaper put it, the Mothers’ Union has told its members "Thou shalt help to save the planet".

“As we watch the effects on people all around the world of massive international issues such as climate change and unjust trade laws, we can all feel powerless. This booklet illustrates not only the power of the consumer but also our responsibility to look after the planet,” said Reg Bailey, Chief Executive of the MU. “It makes complex issues accessible and change achievable through personal, practical lifestyle changes.”

Mothers’ Union membership in developing countries far exceeds membership in the UK, and most of them are directly affected by poverty, inequality and trade limitations. The MU says that, while charitable relief and development are vital, each person with consumer power has a voice that will be listened to. As well as lobbying governments for policy to benefit the poor, individual influence can be a commanding tool for change.
