A late surge in candidates for ministerial training has again led the Church of England to arrange extra selection conferences. The Ministry Division is putting on five extra conferences before the end of August, in time for the new academic year. Last year, 2004, saw vocations return to the level of the year 2000, with 727 candidates attending selection conferences, and the highest number of recommendations for training, 566, since 1998. Figures for this year are expected to match 2004. There are, currently, 1308 future Church of England clergy in training.
"God still calls, people respond, and the Church rejoices – it's very encouraging," said Ven Dr Gordon Kuhrt, Director of Ministry.
