Covenant roadshows

The Anglican-Methodist Covenant, not yet three years old, has been taken across the country in a series of roadshows this spring.

The aim of the events, explained the Revd John Cole, National Adviser within the Council for Christian Unity, was to "hear from the movers and shakers in dioceses and districts about how they see the Covenant developing locally."

More than 600 delegates were expected to attend the events and their views will be analysed as part of the next stage in the Covenant, an interim report to General Synod and Methodist Conference next year.

There are now more than 100 initiatives of Anglican-Methodist collaboration springing from the Covenant, with one of the most compelling examples in north Yorkshire, in the Mowbray deanery and the Thirsk and Northallerton circuit.

"Already they have a single ministry team of ordained and lay people, with a joint plan for worship," explained John Cole. "They are engaged with other churches, too, and have sponsored an innovative IT project putting laptops in village centres."

Examples like this, he believes, signal the way that the Covenant in action can help the Church breathe new life into local communities. Delegates at the roadshows have taken away a CD of the presentation in order to ignite further interest in the Covenant at the local level.
